Terms of Service

Reading NPR’s piece on the terms of service really got me thinking about how dangerous it is to just mindlessly agree to those kinds of things. I am one of those people who just scroll to the bottom of the screen and agree to the terms of service simply because it is more convenient for me. After reading the piece that NPR had posted, it got me thinking about how much I have already agreed to. I would hope that it wouldn’t be anything nearly as concerning as giving up my first-born child. Also, companies could really take advantage of customers this way and most would never know it, unless of course they were that one in 500. In a way it seems kind of dangerous, because most companies know that hardly anyone actually reads the terms of service, so they know the damage they could do. However, because of this I feel like we as consumers are also putting a lot of trust into these companies to not deceive us. I’m sure there have been issues in the past regarding terms of service agreements and angry consumers not knowing what they agreed to, and I am sure there will be many more in the future. I am curious to see how it could change in the future, or how bad it could get.
